Cancel a Domain Registration

There may be many reasons why you may want to cancel your domain registration. Unfortunately, there is no way to “cancel” a registration. To get ride of a domain name that you no longer need, and stop paying for it, you only need to stop renewing the domain.

By default, your domains will renew automatically before the expiry date (this is standard across most registers). To cancel a domain registration, you simply need to disable the auto renew and wait for it to expire. Here is how.

Disabling Auto Renew

In order to disable auto renew on your domain and cancel your domain registration, you first need to access your Deluxe Hosting client area.

If you do not know how to access your client area, you can find out here.

Deluxe Client Area

Once you are logged into your client area, you will need to access your My Domains section. You can access this two different ways.

First, you can click the Domains block in the center of the home page.

Or, you can choose My Domains from the drop down menu after clicking on Domains from the upper menu bar.

My Domains

You will now see a list of all of your domain names that you currently have registered with Deluxe Hosting. Find the domain that you no longer wish to keep registered and click on the Active button, or you can click anywhere in that row, other then the domain name. This will link you to your website.

My Domains - Autorenew

One on your domain management page, you will see the Manage  menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Click on Auto Renew for this menu.

You will now see the current status of the auto renewal, as well as a button to toggle the status. Toggle this to Disabled to allow the domain to expire.

You will still receive notifications when the domain is due for renewal, but these can be ignored.

Domain Expiry

Even with auto renew disabled, you will receive notifications that your domain is going to expire. The reason these emails will continue until the domain is expired is because once a domain is expired and released, there is no guarantee that you can register it again. These notifications can be ignored.

Before you cancel your domain registration, you should be aware that once the domain is released, it can be registered by anyone, including your competitors. For this reason, you must be absolutely certain that you okay with losing control of the domain name forever. If there is any chance that you may want to use it again in the future, you may want to hold on to it.

You can find information on the domain name life cycle here.

If you are still having issues, and need further support, please reach out to our support team using any of these methods.
